Boxer Dog Training

Boxer Dog Training Overview

Of all dog breeds that can be trained, Boxers are among the friendliest and most playful. While this is a good thing if you’re training your dog to be sociable with other people, it can definitely make boxer dog training as attack or guard dogs quite difficult. It can, however, be done with enough time and the right techniques.

Training for Boxers can start as early as six weeks after birth. Getting an early start with your dog’s training is generally a good idea to help establish your identity as a master and friend. Boxers are very loyal and protective of their masters, so making this idea clear early on will work out to your advantage.

Although Boxers are already friendly and loving by nature, this behavior still needs to be reinforced by training. Boxer training is most often done with the use of repetitive commands – saying ’sit’ again and again, for example – combined with positive reinforcement by rewarding or congratulating your dog for following the command.

You don’t necessarily have to train your Boxer yourself. Even if it’s been established that you are the master, Boxers will still respond very well to other people. A paid trainer is still a good and effective option that you may want to consider, especially if you don’t have time yourself or just don’t want to take the time to learn how to properly do the training. It can take some time to perfect your methods and techniques, so that is always an option you can consider if you don’t want to go through the trouble of trying on your own.

Mutts: America’s Dogs (Hardcover)

Mutts: America's Dogs

From Library Journal

In this encyclopedic approach to the all-American dog-the mixed breed-behaviorist Kilcommons (Good Owners, Great Dogs, Warner, 1992) and coauthor Capuzzo have considered mutts from all angles and come up with over 100 combinations. They start out by providing an introduction to mixes and pointedly denounce purebreds, contending that purebreds are riddled with problems from overbreeding and lack of hybrid vigor. In Part 2, the meat and potatoes of the book, the authors use the American Kennel Club classification as an organizational focus to group their mutts by type: sporting (including retriever, setter, spaniel, and pointer mixes), hound, working, terrier, herding, and nonsporting. Offering insight into the behavioral characteristics of the purebred that make up the mutt in question, Kilcommons and Capuzzo tell readers what to expect from various combinations of breeds. Part 3 focuses on selection and training, giving commonsense advice that would benefit all dog owners. Peppered with humor, illustrative stories, and captivating photos, this guide should be read by all potential owners before they purchase that “doggy in the window.” Essential for public libraries.
