An African safari is not complete without taking a ride on a hot air-driven balloon.

In 1976, Alan Root and his spouse Joan- wildlife movie producers, used a hot air balloon to shoot video clips of wildlife. It was quicker, to use the balloon to discover places where a vehicle could hardly reach, to film sensational aerials of wildlife.

Thereafter, the idea drew the curiosity of clients who were willing to pay top-dollar for this once a lifetime adventure. This gave birth to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.

Its early morning in the Masai Mara. The blanket of darkness is quite heavy on the morning and causes the reddish orange flame from the burner of the hot-air balloon beam vividly bright.

As the sun emerges from behind the hills, the 100-foot tall balloon is afloat across the Masai Mara savanah with each one of us lodged in a woven basket installed on the huge balloon.

Simply put, it's magic! The airstreams bear us out of track, beyond the brink of the Ngama hills and across in the direction of the Talek River. Directly below, a handful of gray-back Jackals run haphazardly amidst the shrubs and a hare flits to its underground retreat.

Afloat, we have a vantage eagle's eye sight of the expanse of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti Parks stretching as far as the eye can perceive. It seems limitless.

We take 90 degrees spin and below we notice the heads of giraffes through the canopy of acacia trees as they nibble the leaves, barely observing us drifting in the air above.

After one hour or so adrift, the flight ends with a bouncy landing bringing us back to the ground. Next we creep out of the carrier to a champagne breakfast. The beauty is that this breakfast happens in the wild, wherever you land, and it's cooked as you see with the burners that a short while before held you hovering in the air. What a way to begin our day!

"Over time, there has been improvements in hot air balloon innovations. The burners are far more efficient and less noisy than the previous balloon safaris" clarifies the captain.

"One of the things that amazes many first-time balloonists is the absolute calm, the silence as you sail above the savanah, the woodland and the streams of the Masai Mara. The noises below drift clearly upwards: a lion's bellow, elephants crashing through the bush, baboons perched on the tips of the trees. If you're fortunate you will surge higher above for the sight of a lifetime. " the captain offers.

After the end year rains, the vegetation is rich green as we drive back to our lodge viewing wildlife en-route. It is contrasting as these are the similar grasslands which, in November, were golden, dried out and hash.

Abruptly we encounter a mother cheetah marking her tree, spraying it with urine. Finished, she checks our group and then releases a soft chirping sound as she makes her way through the grass. Most probably she is looking for her cubs.

The plains are packed with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the scene is just fabulous.
