Solutions: For Your Dog–and You (Hardcover)

Solutions: For Your Dog--and You

Amazon.com Review

So you’ve gotten the pick of the litter and managed to accomplish potty training. What next? Not everyone has the time to sit through books outlining all sorts of irrelevant issues, so Mordecai Siegal and Matthew Margolis (Uncle Matty of I Just Got a Puppy, Now What Do I Do?) have created a straightforward book geared to fixing specific problems. Solutions: For Your Dog–and You covers everything from obedience training to first aid, and contains an especially helpful chapter for those at their wit’s end. Titled “He’s Driving Me Crazy,” it tackles those serious behavior problems like jumping on guests, biting, and bolting out the front door.

Most of the solutions are short–a half-page, at most–and present fairly commonsense approaches. As with raising children, consistency is important with a dog, and the authors caution against allowing Rover to jump on you if he’s not allowed to jump on others. Also, watch your reaction to poor behavior. If you go ballistic the first time your new dog wets the rug, you may be setting the stage for your four-legged friend to act guilty every time you enter the room. Crates, leashes, feeding, and grooming are all covered, with regular insistence that you view your dog as an individual and respond to his individual needs. General information is provided on a dog’s anatomy, as well as ways of identifying parasites, deficiencies, and illness. Managing to cover a wide range of information in a short space, this is an excellent all-around guide for daily care of all canines. –Jill Lightner

Loving, Learning About and Losing AnimalsUnderstanding how much our actions impact a dog’s behavior is the key to enjoying a long and loving life together, according to Mordecai Siegal, an award-winning author of 26 books, and Matthew Margolis, expert trainer and host of PBS’s Woof, It’s a Dog’s Life. In their warm, instructive and well-organized guide, Solutions: For Your Dog–and You, they explain everything from preparing to adopt a dog, to dog training, to saving a dog who has stopped breathing. Praise for Gaddis? Jenny Willow: “A great story, detailed and moving with characters and places every bird hunter has known.” — The Checkcord

Praise for Gaddis?s Jenny Willow: ” . . . a heartwarming, compassionate story . . . an endearing read.” — Publishers Weekly

Product Description

On the heels of his highly-acclaimed novel Jenny Willow, Mike Gaddis reaches again into a half-century love affair with pointing dogs and upland birds to retrieve the true-life story of Zip Zap, his greatest English setter. Gaddis swore to be painfully selective in choosing the puppy that would accompany him as he pursued his dream of competing in horseback field trials. He knew the smallest female of the litter was special, but he didn?t fully realize her potential until he let her loose in the field. Her lightning speed earned her the name Zip Zap, and she grew to be the most brilliant bird dog Gaddis ever owned. In this absorbing memoir, Gaddis celebrates the dog?s indomitable spirit and tells the story of training and developing a superior pointer, from her first unrefined runs in the amateur puppy stakes to victorious performances in major championships. Evocatively told and set against the plantation quail hunting and field trialing legacy of the Old South, here is a rich, powerful memoir, certain to gain favor with anyone who has shared the destiny of a once-in-a-lifetime dog.
