I wish I’d had this handy guide when we first adopted our dogs from a rescue group. I know I wouldn’t consider adopting a dog again without rereading this book first. This book has helped us have a better relationship with our dogs. We’ve been able to work with them to change behaviors that were annoying us. We used this book’s problem solving tools to help our dogs understand when barking was welcome (to scare away potential intruders) and when it was not welcome (when the mailman was delivering our mail). We worked with them to make our walks comfortable rather than a struggle to keep moving by giving them time at the middle of the walk to sniff around the neighborhood. We retrained our dogs using this book’s step by step method for success. We felt great about using the “kind and firm approach” described in this book. We’re all happier, and I will continue to recommend this book to all dog owners. Whether you’ve had your dog forever (or what seems like forever like me) or you’re considering adopting a dog, this innovative “guide to raising a happy, well-trained dog” gives you tips on everything from choosing the best dog to fit your personality to pinpointing problems and correcting undesirable behaviors. I found expert advice on choosing a good breeder, finding a great veterinarian, traveling with our dogs, leaving our dogs at a kennel, and pup-proofing our home.

While this book has some excellent information, much of it is a rehash of many other excellent dog raising and training books.

Rebeccasreads highly recommends PUP PARENTING as an instructive & entertaining guide into the modern ways of raising loving & responsible canine companions.

Gone are the “leader of the pack-rule by dominance & fear” ways of the past. Now it’s all about who REALLY needs the training — or re-training — & how to transform your over-indulged, out-of-control family member by first & foremost looking at how YOU behave!

With a firm & affectionate attitude the authors cover everything from puphood to caring for your beloved friend at the end.

They also involve you, the reader, by asking you to “step back” & take some long & serious looks at how you run your home life & your family members. Don’t worry, there are many funnily dreadful tales & lots of gladsome successes that will have you wagging your tail!
